Signal‘s rise in popularity has been somewhat of a sensation and with his brand new EP on Critical just around the corner we grabbed the Dutch producer for a chat and he dropped us a seriously good guest mix. Enjoy!
Hi Jonathan! The end of 2016 is fast approaching? What’s been your highlight of the year so far?
Probably playing Critical Sound in Fabric back in April.
You’ve been something of a sensation in the scene since you burst into it at a very young age – what do you put your rapid and substantial rise to popularity down to?
I definitely think Critical & Noisia have had the biggest influence in my success.
So you’re back on Critical Music with the ‘Parallax EP’. How long has it taken you to get the EP finished, your release rate is impressive.
That’s hard to say honestly. I usually just make tunes and eventually think: “These tunes could make a decent EP…”. It’s not like I aim to make an EP or something.
Whilst you don’t stick to one specific sound you’ve definitely become known for your harder stuff – does this bother you at all or is that a style of music that you find yourself delving in to more and more?
Not at all, I’ve found myself moving away from the deeper stuff anyway, I got kind of bored of it to be honest. Lots of my unreleased stuff is more tech and neurofunk. I’ve also been working on more liquid.
One track from the EP that definitely doesn’t follow that trend is Downfall which features some lovely vocals from Zoe Klinck – how did you end up working with her?
After I heard her two features on Mefjus’s Emulation LP I fell in love with her voice. Kasra was asking for a track that was different from the others on the EP so I made a liquid tune, and I asked him if he could contact Zoe for a vocal feature.
If you had to pick one, what’s your personal favourite from the EP and why?
Probably Fearless with Disprove, it’s probably the one that cost us the least time out of all of our collabs yet it always gets a great reaction from the crowd.
What are you running in your studio at the minute? Is there anything your dying to get your hands on?
I have a pair of Adam A7Xs and a Focusrite 2i2 interface. I really need to sort my acoustics out so anything that would help with that is something I’m dying to get my hands onto.
Can you give us your top 5 tracks that you’re feeling right now?
In no particular order:
Annix & Teddy Killerz – Jungle Consumes Everything
Current Value – Impact
Noisia & Phace – Floating Zero
Noisia – Mantra
War – Lesser Evil
Thanks matey! Is there anything else you want to tell us about?
I’ll be playing In:Motion/Critical Sound this Saturday in Bristol which is an event I’m really looking forward to!
And of course thanks for having me for this interview.
